Police suspect that a teen driver who lost control of her vehicle Thursday afternoon -- causing a crash near Americus that injured herself and two friends -- had consumed alcoholic beverages.
Results of a blood test done after the wreck were pending Friday afternoon, but the girl appeared to have been drinking, according to a crash report filed by Deputy Jacob Amberger of the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department.
Marah E. Brenneman, 16, of Battle Ground is being treated at Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis for injuries to her hip after being pinned under her vehicle. She was last listed in fair condition in the critical care unit.
Two of her passengers, Kassandra R. Emrich, 17, of West Lafayette and David E. Cowgill, 19, of West Lafayette, were treated Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and released.
Lafayette police officer Tim Bonner, a crash reconstructionist with the Lafayette Metro Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, said Friday that officers did find unopened containers of beer in the pickup truck that Brenneman was driving.
The FACT team is investigating the crash.
The single-vehicle wreck occurred about 4 p.m. Thursday on Grant Road near County Road 950 North in northeastern Tippecanoe County.
According to the crash report, Brenneman was driving a 1988 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck north on Grant Street when she missed a 90-degree turn in the road.
The pickup went into a field and rolled 2 1/2 times, ejecting Cowgill and Trent Fitzmaurice, 18, of Buck Creek, who were riding in the truck's bed.
Fitzmaurice and another passenger, Jordan Wilson, 18, of Lafayette, declined medical treatment at the scene.
Investigators said they will forward the case to the prosecutor's office because portable breath tests done on the five teens showed that Fitzmaurice and Cowgill had consumed alcoholic beverages.
Fitzmaurice had a blood-alcohol content of 0.10 percent after the wreck, according to the crash report. Cowgill had a BAC of 0.04 percent.
Bonner said an officer with Indianapolis' FACT team spoke with Brenneman at Wishard Hospital.
Police have not yet confirmed where the teens had been prior to the wreck, but it appeared that they had been enjoying a day of recreation on the water.
