Danaher may not possess alcohol during 1-year probation
Larry Danaher, a former Lafayette police officer and former city parks security director, was sentenced to probation Friday after pleading guilty to misdemeanor drunken driving.
Danaher, 46, and his wife, a passenger on his motorcycle, suffered minor injuries April 21 when Danaher crashed the motorcycle as they were leaving a subdivision off South 18th Street.
Police said Danaher had a blood-alcohol content of 0.16 percent after the crash, twice the legal limit for driving in Indiana.
Danaher, who retired from the police department in 2002, resigned as head of parks security after his arrest.
Danaher pleaded guilty Friday in Tippecanoe Superior Court 6 to misdemeanor operating while intoxicated based on a plea agreement, according to court records. Danaher, represented by Lafayette attorney Matt Sandy, was sentenced to one year on unsupervised probation.
As terms of his probation, Danaher may not possess alcohol; may not enter a bar, tavern or liquor store; may not possess firearms; must attend a victim impact panel; and must waive his Fourth Amendments rights and submit to random drug and alcohol screens if asked.
According to the sentencing order, Danaher already has completed 40 hours of community service and completed a drug and alcohol education program.
The judge recommended that the Bureau of Motor Vehicles place Danaher on a restricted driver's license for 180 days.
