A Lafayette man was jailed Friday on multiple offenses after leading police on a brief pursuit before crashing south of downtown Lafayette.
Christopher C. Simpson, 32, was being held in the Tippecanoe County Jail on a $5,000 surety bond. He posted bond and was released about 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Officer Marcus Slifer of the West Lafayette Police Department said Simpson struck five utility poles and a parked car along several blocks of South Fourth Street.
His 2001 GMC Jimmy sport utility vehicle came to a stop near Central Street after hitting and knocking down the fifth utility pole.
Slifer said a West Lafayette officer tried to pull Simpson over about 3:30 a.m. on suspicion of driving drunk on State Street near Tapawingo Drive.
He refused to stop and the chase crossed the Wabash River, Slifer said.
Simpson was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, criminal recklessness and refusing to submit to a chemical test.
Both West Lafayette and Lafayette officers responded to the crash scene.
