A Subaru of Indiana Automotive employee seriously injured in an alcohol-related crash July 6 has been transferred from Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital to a care facility in Terre Haute.
David J. Osadchuk, 31, has been able to open his eyes, move his right leg and yawn, according to his mother-in-law, Shelly Phillips.
But doctors told the family that his movements thus far could be only reflexes.
"They said they're not sure if he is going to wake up or not," Phillips said Friday.
"We have to keep hoping and praying that they are wrong."
Osadchuk is at Health South, a rehabilitation center in Terre Haute.
He and his wife, Amy, moved to the Lafayette area in June when he was offered a full-time job at SIA.
The former Evansille resident was just leaving work when his Chevrolet Cavalier was hit from behind by a Dodge Durango driven by Juvenito Jose Castillo, 24, on Indiana 38 East.
Castillo, of Lafayette, is charged in Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 with a Class C felony -- operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury -- and four other offenses.
A blood sample taken from Castillo after the crash indicated he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.218 percent.
The legal limit for driving in Indiana is 0.08 percent.
Phillips said the family is waiting on the results of tests that measured his level of brain activity.
SIA spokeswoman Ann McConnell said based upon his medical diagnosis, Osadchuk will have his job available when he gets better.
"Many associates have been asking about him, wanting to know how he is doing," she said.
