20-year-old charged in triple fatality

A Lafayette man was arrested and jailed Sunday after the car he was driving crashed, killing the car's two passengers, according to police.

Christopher L. Weaver, 19, of Lafayette, was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, said Lafayette Police Lt. Jim Taul.

Weaver was being held Sunday on a $10,000 surety bond, according to the Tippecanoe County Jail.

The crash happened in the 400 block of Wabash Avenue about 6:20 a.m. Sunday, Taul said.

Weaver was driving the vehicle at a high rate of speed, Taul said, northbound on Wabash Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a guardrail.

"The guardrail went through the vehicle, impaled the right side passenger and back seat right side passenger," Taul said.

The passengers, ages 17 and 19, died, Taul said.

The identities of the two people who died, Taul said, were not being released because the families needed to be notified.

Taul said, the F.A.C.T. team was paged and responded to the crash scene.

F.A.C.T., which stands for Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, is comprised of members of the Indiana State Police, West Lafayette Police, LPD and Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department.
