A
Lafayette
man
is
facing
felony
DUI
charges
after
the
car
he
was
driving
went
out
of
control
Monday
and
rolled
onto
another
vehicle,
killing
an
Indianapolis
woman.
Evan
J.
Erickson,
27,
of
the
1000
block
of
Tenth
Street,
was
driving
north
on
Interstate
65
shortly
before
7:30
p.m.
when
he
lost
control
of
his
blue
1990
Toyota
about
four
miles
south
of
Indiana
38,
according
to
Sgt.
Jay
Kistler
of
the
Indiana
State
Police.
"He
lost
control,
went
through
the
median
and
began
rolling
or
turning
over,"
Kistler
said.
"The
deceased
was
southbound
in
the
right-hand
lane
when
the
other
vehicle
rolled
on
top
of
her.
She
didn't
know
what
hit
her."
The
woman's
identity
has
not
been
released
pending
notification
of
next
of
kin.
There
were
no
passengers
in
either
vehicle.
Erickson
was
admitted
to
Home
Hospital
and
was
listed
in
fair
condition.
He
will
be
cited
for
operating
a
motor
vehicle
while
intoxicated,
and
operating
a
motor
vehicle
while
intoxicated
causing
the
death
of
another,
Kistler
said.
The
first
DUI
charge
is a
felony
because
this
is
Erickson's
second
offense
of
operating
while
intoxicated
within
a
five-year
period,
Kistler
said.
He
would
not
reveal
Erickson's
blood-alcohol
content.
"He
will
be
held
overnight
for
observation
at
the
hospital
and
will
be
released,
probably
in
the
morning,
after
which
he
will
be
incarcerated,"
Kistler
said.
Responders
from
the
Sheffield
Township
Volunteer
Fire
Department
assisted
at
the
scene.
The
Tippecanoe
County
Sheriff's
Department
helped
divert
traffic
off
the
interstate
onto
Indiana
38
while
the
wreck
was
being
investigated.
A
second
wreck
occurred
nearby
on
the
interstate,
involving
property
damage
only,
which
the
sheriff's
department
also
handled.
