Man dies after hitting tree in ATV rollover

NEWTOWN -- A Veedersburg man who was critically injured in a weekend ATV crash has died.

Alan D. Verhey, 22, died at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday as a result of head injuries sustained about 4 a.m. Sunday when he rolled his ATV and hit a tree. He was not wearing a helmet.

According to a Fountain County Sheriff's Department news release, alcohol, speed and loose gravel all appeared to be contributing factors in the crash.

Verhey had been riding with Gerald L. Munson, 21, of Attica, each on his own four wheeler, when Verhey tried to make a turn at the intersection of Union Church Road and Kirkpatrick Road, about two miles southeast of Newtown in Fountain County.

Verhey was going an estimated 30 to 40 mph on gravel roads, which caused him to lose control during the attempted turn, according to Fountain County Sheriff's Deputy Adam Johnson, who investigated the crash.

Munson was arrested after he was investigated for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Toxicology test results were not yet available for Verhey.

Verhey was flown by PHI Air Medical to Carle Hospital in Urbana, Ill., where he died.
