CRAWFORDSVILLE - New charges have been filed against a Wingate man accused of striking a group of motorcyclists with his car last month, killing three riders.
Rodney Newkirk, 24, has been rearrested and is being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail. Newkirk, who was booked Nov. 3, now faces formal charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing death; possession of cocaine; and possession of paraphernalia.
Newkirk originally was arrested one month ago on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and was freed on $4,000 bond.
Montgomery County investigators said Newkirk was driving a car Oct. 1 that crashed into a group of motorcyclists as they rode on a county road near Ladoga. Killed in the crash were Dr. Robert C. Brooksby, 56, Zionsville; Maria Shipley, 51, Carmel; and Michael Lee Bird, 50, Indianapolis.
