CARROLL COUNTY -- One driver is in the Carroll County Jail and another driver and passengers are recovering from injuries after a crash Saturday afternoon in northern Carroll County.
At 2:12 p.m., Carroll County 911 received a report of a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 421 south of the Carroll/White County line.
Investigators said David Scott, age unknown, of rural Monon was driving southbound on U.S. 421 in a maroon 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. As Scott approached a "T" intersection at Fairway Lane, a white 1999 Chevrolet Lumina driven by Alfredo Flores, 40, of Monticello failed to yield the right of way.
Flores allegedly drove the Lumina directly into the path of the Jeep, injuring Scott and several passengers. The extent of their injuries was not immediately known. Everyone in the Jeep was wearing seat belts, police said.
The injured parties were transported to White County Memorial Hospital for observation. The identities of the passengers was not immediately available.
According to police, Flores displayed signs of intoxication. He was offered and submitted to a chemical breath test that showed a blood alcohol content of 0.21 percent, which is nearly three times the legal limit in Indiana.
Flores was booked into the Carroll County Jail. He was initially being held for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a class A misdemeanor; and operating a vehicle while never licensed, a class C misdemeanor.
He also was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way at a personal injury crash, a class C infraction. Flores' bond was set at $2,500.
Police said they believe the use of seat belts and airbags in the crash helped prevent serious injuries to the occupants of both vehicles.
The crash was investigated by Monticello Police Patrolman Thad Miller, Monticello Police Sgt. Jeff Hunt, Carroll County Sheriff's deputies Steve Mullin and Walt Raderstorf, Carroll County Sheriff's Cpl. Tobe Leazenby, Monticello Fire and Rescue Squad and Carroll County EMS.
